Why Are the Five Afflictions Entitled as Five Poisons?

This text, written by Menri Shedrub Khenpo, and translated by Sangmo Yangri, explores the nature of the five afflictions: attachment, aversion, dullness, pride, and envy. He likens these afflictions to poisons, as they can corrode the mind and hinder spiritual progress.

The analogy of poisons:

  • Attachment (Water Poison): Like water, attachment arises from all sensory experiences, particularly the visual sense. It clings to objects of desire, preventing spiritual liberation.
  • Aversion (Fire Poison): Similar to fire, aversion consumes the mind, body, and speech. It fuels negative emotions and actions, hindering spiritual growth.
  • Dullness (Darkness Poison): Dullness obscures the mind, hindering clarity and insight. It leads to laziness and a lack of motivation to practice Dharma.
  • Pride (Wind Poison): Pride arises from a distorted sense of self-importance. It fuels egotism and arrogance, obstructing spiritual development.
  • Envy (Earth Poison): Envy arises from resentment towards others’ possessions or qualities. It poisons the mind with negativity, leading to suffering.

By recognizing these afflictions as poisons, we can develop mindfulness and wisdom to counteract their harmful effects. Overcoming these poisons is essential for attaining spiritual liberation and enlightenment.
